KARIBA—Government has installed an automatic weather station at Lake Kariba’s Control Tower, a move officials say will strengthen safety on the lake by providing real-time weather information to support rescue and operational planning.
The Ministry of Transport says the station will enable authorities to “operate proactively using accurate local weather data to safeguard lives, coordinate rescue operations, and manage infrastructure sustainably.”
According to the Ministry, the system measures key weather elements including wind speed, wind direction, and rainfall in real time. With continuous updates, authorities are expected to strengthen monitoring and respond faster when conditions deteriorate.
Officials said the installation is expected to improve early warning capability, helping guide rescue missions and reduce accidents linked to sudden storms and shifting winds on Lake Kariba.
The Ministry also described the project as part of broader efforts to modernise inland water transport and improve protection for people who rely on the lake for livelihoods, including fishermen, tourists, and lakeside communities.
The Control Tower, which plays an important role in overseeing activity around the lake, is expected to benefit from the new station through improved situational awareness for vessel operators and emergency response teams.
In addition to enhancing day to-day navigation safety, the Ministry said the improved data will assist in managing critical lake infrastructure more effectively, especially during periods of heavy rainfall or strong winds.
When asked about the expected impact, the following officials and industry voices welcomed the development.
Kapenta Union of Zimbabwe Mr Rhodes Kudawafeya madyira welcomed the move by Government.
“We have often suffered losses when storms come suddenly. Having accurate local weather information will help fishermen plan better and reduce the risks we face every day on the water.”
“The lake is our workplace and our source of income. Real-time wind and rainfall updates will help protect lives and protect our catch. We support any initiative that improves safety for our members.”
In an interview with Gemnation Kariba Mayor Nyasha Ralph Maoneyi said this is a welcome step.
“This is a welcome step toward safeguarding people and strengthening lake operations. As Kariba grows in tourism and inland transport activity, safety measures like this automatic weather station are essential to preventing accidents and improving emergency response.”
The Ministry indicated that the project forms part of ongoing work to protect Lake Kariba’s users while supporting safer movement of people and goods across the water.
