HARARE – The Moyo family is mourning the passing of Esther Zengeya-Mhurai, the mother of the late musician Tongai Moyo, who died on Wednesday at the remarkable age of 94.
Affectionately known as Gogo Chihera, she passed away peacefully at her rural home in Sesombe, Village 6, where she had been staying with family.
Family spokesperson Obert Moyo confirmed her death, saying she had been unwell due to complications associated with advanced age.
He added that Gogo Chihera Gogo Chihera also suffered from asthma and persistent leg pains in her final years.
Despite her health challenges, Gogo Chihera was remembered not for illness, but for the role she played as the heart of her family — a woman whose presence brought calm, unity, and balance.
“She was a unifier,” said Obert Moyo. “Whenever there were misunderstandings within the family, Gogo Chihera would call everyone to order. She loved everyone equally. We have lost a pillar.”
In a message shared with the wider community, Obert Moyo informed Zimbabweans of the family’s loss and appealed for support as they come to terms with her passing.

Mourners have since gathered at the Sesombe homestead in Village 6, where the family is receiving condolences. Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Gogo Chihera’s long life, marked by resilience, wisdom, and quiet authority, leaves behind memories that will continue to bind her family together — even in her absence.
