Honde Valley – The NetOne Albun Marathon has firmly established itself as a major driver of sports tourism, community development, and national pride, transforming the scenic Eastern Highlands into a hub for athletes and visitors from around the world.

Now internationally certified, the marathon continues to grow in scale and reputation, drawing thousands of local and international participants eager to test their endurance amid the valley’s breathtaking landscapes.

Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industries, Hon. Barbra Rwodzi, who graced the event as Guest of Honour, hailed the marathon as a key economic driver.

She urged Zimbabwe’s tourism sector to embrace the potential of such events, highlighting their role in boosting rural economies.

“Rural households can benefit directly by establishing chalets and facilities to host visitors, turning tourism into a sustainable income stream,” Minister Rwodzi noted.

Echoing national priorities, NetOne Group CEO Engineer Raphael Mushanawani emphasized the marathon’s alignment with Vision 2030, stating:

“Our sponsorship reflects a whole-of-government approach to driving national development, uniting sports, tourism, and community growth.”

This year, NetOne went beyond the race itself, investing in the community through Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives, including donations of computers and sanitary ware to local institutions—a legacy that extends well beyond the finish line.

Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, was represented by Chief Director Mr. Prince Sibanda, illustrating broad governmental support for the event.

The marathon also showcased local leadership and inspiration. Chief Mutasa encouraged successful natives, from business leaders to soccer stars, to reinvest in their roots and empower their communities.

International certification has significantly enhanced the marathon’s prestige, attracting elite athletes and positioning Zimbabwe as a serious contender in global sports tourism.

By blending athleticism, tourism, and social impact, the NetOne Albun Marathon has evolved into more than just a race—it is a dynamic platform that highlights Zimbabwe’s natural beauty, entrepreneurial spirit, and global potential.
