Kariba—The launch of the Batonga Classic Market and Sanitation Services in Kariba marks a major step toward sustainable economic growth in Zimbabwe.
Funded by the Swedish Embassy and implemented by Gender Links Zimbabwe in partnership with the Municipality of Kariba and the Ministry of Local Government, this initiative is redefining market infrastructure and management.
Originally launched in 2019 with a $250,000 investment, the market has grown to accommodate 150 vendors, officially opening for business in 2024. This transformation highlights the power of community-driven projects in boosting economic resilience.
During a Gender Links Monitoring and Support Visit on Thursday, Programs Coordinator Tapiwa Zvaraya emphasized the need for a national shift in market management.
“To achieve Vision 2030, sustainable market practices are essential—this includes proper waste management, infrastructure maintenance, and health and safety compliance,” he said.
Kariba Mayor Ralph Nyasha Maoneyi echoed these sentiments, underscoring the importance of grassroots initiatives in national development.
“Markets like Batonga Classic play a crucial role in economic growth and improving livelihoods. We urge all stakeholders to work together to sustain this progress,” he stated.
For local entrepreneurs, the impact is already evident.
Asmin Chikukwa, chairperson of the market, shared:
“I used to sell my produce by the roadside, but now I have a safe and clean space to work. This market has changed my life.”
Vendor Golden Manyanga, who sells vegetables and other food items, added:
“The market provides us with a great platform to showcase our products and connect with customers. We’re committed to keeping it clean and well-managed.”
The Batonga Classic Market serves as a model for sustainable development, demonstrating how well-managed market facilities can drive economic growth.
