Masvingo—A major corruption crackdown has rocked the education sector as the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) arrested Shylet Mhike, the Provincial Education Director for Masvingo, on allegations of criminal abuse of duty.
Mhike, accused of fraudulently claiming US$600 in travel allowances for an Accounts Verification Exercise in Chivi District—an event she allegedly did not attend—was granted bail at US$200 after appearing in Masvingo Magistrates Court. She has been remanded out of custody until March 19, 2025.
Investigators believe Mhike collaborated with District Schools Inspector Ndongwe Evershine, reportedly pressuring Chivi District Accountant Tapiwa Mapindani into processing the bogus payment. The case has exposed worrying weaknesses in financial oversight within the education system.
The arrest has sparked outrage among community members, who are demanding stricter accountability in the handling of public funds.
With corruption in vital sectors such as education under increasing scrutiny, the outcome of this case could set a precedent for tackling misconduct in public service.
As the legal battle unfolds, the spotlight remains on ZACC’s anti-corruption drive and whether it can restore public trust in government institutions.
