Before becoming a household name in the Zimbabwean music scene, Nigel Nyangombe (33) was just another young man with a dream—one who started out as a cleaner in a recording studio in Gweru.
But from those humble beginnings, his passion for music led him to become one of the country’s most sought-after music producers, composers, and songwriters.
“I’ve always had a love for music since I was a kid,” says Nyangombe, reflecting on his early days. “I started playing keyboards at a very young age, and I always knew that somehow, I wanted to be involved in the music industry.”
In 2008, his journey took an unexpected turn when he landed a job as a cleaner at a recording studio in Gweru.
It was here, surrounded by the beats and rhythms of the studio, that he discovered his true calling.
“I was fascinated by the equipment, the sound systems, and the whole production process. I knew I had to learn more,” Nyangombe recalls.
Determined to pursue his passion, he saved up enough money to buy a laptop and started teaching himself how to produce music.
By 2014, he had made the move to Harare, where his dream of becoming a professional music producer began to take shape.
“I started working with a few local artists, writing songs and producing tracks. But for me, it’s always been about being behind the scenes,” he says with a smile.
Despite his natural talent for performing—he’s a gifted keyboardist, drummer, flutist, and bassist—Nyangombe prefers to let the music speak for itself, working his magic in the studio.
Over the years, his distinct sound has graced the works of some of Zimbabwe’s biggest gospel stars, including Minister Mahendere, Everton Mlalazi, The Vine, Bonnie Deuschle, Janet Manyowa, Bridget Ndanga, and many more. His productions have not only earned him a reputation locally but also gained recognition internationally.
“I don’t just produce music; I create experiences,” says Nyangombe. “Every song, every production has a story. My aim is to ensure that the listeners connect with the music on a deeper level.”
Although known for his work in the gospel music genre, Nyangombe’s versatility as a producer knows no bounds. “I’ve worked across various genres, including R&B, hip hop, Dancehall, Afrobeat, and more. Music is universal. It doesn’t matter the style; it’s all about the feeling it gives.”
His early work in the secular music scene, collaborating with artists like Roki and Alexio, helped him hone his craft.
He has also worked on projects such as Tebere alongside DJ Tamuka and contributed to the Godfather Riddim, solidifying his place in the wider music industry.
Despite his success, Nyangombe remains grounded and has a clear vision for the future of Zimbabwean music.
“Zimbabwean music is growing, and artists are doing well, but there’s still work to be done. We need more investment in quality productions. We must continue to learn, collaborate with the best songwriters, arrangers, and engineers, and ensure our music competes on a global scale.”
When he’s not in the studio, Nyangombe enjoys spending time with his wife, Josie Gladys, and their three beautiful daughters.
“They’re my biggest supporters, and I couldn’t do what I do without them,” he says with pride.
From humble beginnings as a cleaner to creating music that transcends borders, Nigel Nyangombe’s story is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and belief in oneself.
