Irene Christian College in Marlborough, Harare, is making waves in the education sector with its innovative approach to nurturing students.
Going beyond traditional academic subjects, the college is placing a special emphasis on teaching practical life skills, such as cooking and sewing, to its students from Form 1.
Mr Gerald Machiri, the principal of Irene Christian College, expressed the college’s commitment to preparing students for the challenges of the modern world.
“The world is changing rapidly, and if we want to survive in this ever-changing world, we need to keep pushing boundaries of excellence and thrive rather than just cope. Our education system needs to nurture students and armor them beyond classrooms with necessary life skills to prepare them for success in the long run,” said Mr Machiri.
This proactive approach to education extends beyond culinary and sewing skills. Irene Christian College also focuses on teaching students the importance of maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. Students learn about the five food groups and the significance of consuming a wide variety of foods in the right proportions to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
This holistic approach aims to equip students with practical knowledge essential for their overall well-being. In addition to culinary skills, the college emphasises the importance of teaching students a range of other life skills, including time management, resilience, taxation, stress management, digital literacy, finding and following a passion, household chores and maintenance, and maintaining personal hygiene. By integrating these skills into the curriculum, Irene Christian College seeks to empower students to navigate the complexities of the modern world with confidence and competence.
The college’s commitment to holistic education has been exemplified by the outstanding achievements of two of its students, Jayden Nyawata and Alicia Thomas, in the prestigious Cambridge International Examinations.
Their remarkable performances in the Cambridge International IGCSE and AS examinations are a testament to the unwavering commitment to quality education at Irene Christian College and the broader Zimbabwean education system.
Furthermore, the college’s new campus at 14 Adylinn Road in Marlborough, Harare, has been a significant development in the educational landscape.
This new campus features cutting-edge infrastructure, including individual labs for each science discipline, and a state-of-the-art sports field, aiming to expand the sports program and nurture the talents of the students.
