HARARE – In a notice announced through an Extraordinary Government Gazette, the Zimbabwean government has allocated ZWG 147,682,500 for the financial year 2025 to be disbursed to qualifying political parties.
The allocation, made in accordance with the Political Parties (Finance) Act (Chapter 2:11), was published by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Hon. Ziyambi Ziyambi.
The notice, General Notice 1829 of 2025, specifies that the funds will be distributed to parties based on their share of the total votes cast in the last general election.
The two main beneficiaries of this public financing are the ruling ZANU-PF and the main opposition, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
According to the gazette, the Zimbabwe African National Union (Patriotic Front) (ZANU-PF), which garnered 69.3% of the total votes, is set to receive the lion’s share of the funding. The party will be paid ZWG 102,343,972.50.
The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), which received 30.7% of the total votes cast, will receive ZWG 45,338,527.50.
The Political Parties (Finance) Act provides a framework for the state funding of political parties that meet certain criteria, primarily based on their electoral performance.
The purpose of the Act is to ensure that parties have the necessary resources to operate and participate effectively in the country’s democratic processes.
The disbursement comes at a crucial time for both parties as for their political activities.
Political analysts have long debated the role and impact of public funding on Zimbabwe’s political landscape, with some arguing that it strengthens a multi-party democracy while others contend that it can entrench the dominance of major parties.
The notice, dated 2nd September 2025, serves as the official confirmation of the disbursement amounts, signaling the government’s compliance with the legal provisions governing the financing of political parties.
