The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has entered into a partnership with Best Options Properties (BOP), formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This collaboration aims to offer journalists an opportunity to purchase residential stands collectively, with payment plans tailored to their individual financial capabilities.
During a press conference in Harare on Tuesday, BOP’s Howard Matope explained the advantages of the scheme. “The initiative allows journalists to unite as a group, boosting their negotiating power and securing better terms compared to purchasing individually,” Matope said.
The pricing structure has been designed with affordability in mind. For example, residential stands in Rydale Ridge are priced at $45 per square meter.
Buyers are required to pay a 25% deposit, with the option to settle the balance over three to 60 months. Matope highlighted that group purchases could unlock even better deals, potentially lowering initial costs.
“For plots of 300 square meters or smaller, the minimum deposit is $700, while larger plots start with a $1,000 deposit,” Matope added.
The flexible payment system is aimed at easing the burden on journalists, many of whom currently rely on rented accommodation and face financial challenges.
ZUJ Secretary General Perfect Hlongwane emphasized the union’s dedication to improving the welfare of its members.
“Access to land for residential purposes is a core objective of ZUJ,” Hlongwane said. “This partnership with BOP is a major step toward helping our members achieve homeownership and enhance their living standards.”
This agreement comes at a critical time, as many journalists in Zimbabwe continue to face low wages, making homeownership seem out of reach. Hlongwane reiterated that the union’s priority is to address these challenges and provide practical solutions to improve members’ living conditions.
Matope reassured journalists that the land provided by BOP is secure, and all development projects have been approved by local authorities.
As this partnership evolves, it promises to offer journalists not just a path to homeownership but also a sense of community and stability in a profession often marked by economic instability.
