Harare – Almasi Collaborative Arts, in partnership with The Public Theater, New York, has launched Zimbabwe’s inaugural Writer’s Retreat, a groundbreaking initiative to nurture local playwrights.
Running from March 31 to April 12, 2025, the retreat offers five Zimbabwean playwrights a residential space to refine their scripts, explore new ideas, and push creative boundaries in a supportive environment.
The selected playwrights are:
Amanda Ranganawa (Mutare)
Tatenda Mutyambizi (Harare)
Kingsley Chinhanu (Mutare)
Philani Nyoni (Bulawayo)
Rudo Mutangadura (Harare)
Danai Gurira, Executive Artistic Director of Almasi Collaborative Arts, expressed her excitement about the retreat’s potential:
“As a playwright who has benefited from writer’s retreats, I wanted to bring this opportunity to Zimbabwe. Special thanks to The Public Theater and Oskar Eustis for believing in Zimbabwean voices.”
This initiative marks a major step forward for Zimbabwe’s literary and performing arts scene, promising bold, original storytelling for years to come.
