In response to a dramatic rise in elephant numbers, Zimbabwe has authorized a controlled culling initiative in the Save Valley Conservancy, the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) announced on Tuesday.
The region’s elephant population has reached more than three times its sustainable limit, prompting urgent ecological concerns.
According to ZimParks, the initial phase will involve the culling of 50 elephants as part of a broader wildlife management strategy.
“This management quota is intended to address the surging elephant population in the area,” said ZimParks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo.
A 2024 aerial survey revealed that approximately 2,550 elephants inhabit the Save Valley Conservancy—well beyond its estimated carrying capacity of 800.
While previous efforts saw 200 elephants relocated to other reserves over the past five years, these measures have failed to slow the population increase.
To support local communities, ZimParks plans to distribute meat from the culled elephants, offering a source of protein and fostering positive community relations. The ivory, however, will remain under state control to deter illegal trade and ensure transparency.
ZimParks maintains that culling is a necessary step amid financial and logistical constraints. However, conservationists have voiced ethical concerns, warning that the practice may undermine conservation goals and harm wildlife ecosystems in the long term.
Despite the controversy, the authority reaffirmed its commitment to “responsible, sustainable management of wildlife resources for the benefit of present and future generations.”
Officials hope the strategy will stabilize the elephant population and restore ecological balance, benefiting both wildlife and human communities.
As the culling begins, the move continues to spark debate about conservation methods in Zimbabwe—raising broader questions about how best to manage wildlife in a changing and constrained environment.
