Banket — The ruling party, ZANU PF, is crafting a Social Media Policy that will regulate party members’ use for social media following an increase of social media abuse by some rogue elements.
This was revealed by the party’s Politburo member, who is Secretary for ICT, Hon Ziyambi Ziyambi during an inter district meeting held in Banket.
Minister Ziyambi, who is also the country’s justice minister, once adopted the policy, will help address issues of social abuse being used to spread malicious information that threaten not only the party but have potential to destabilize the peace being enjoyed in the country.
“We now have the issue of social media where we can get information as fast as something happens, but now we have some people abusing social media platforms publishing and spreading falsehoods, and as a party, we are working on draft social media policy that will guide and shape how we communicate through social media so that we deal with issues of social media abuse, ” he said.
Minister Ziyambi also warned journalists to adhere to journalism standards that do not cause despondency and chaos as the law will take its course
“We have a law that deals with people who transmit information that promotes hate speech, anarchy, and threatens peace, so media practioneers should follow the law, we have people talking about that we have arrested that journalist (Blessed Mhlanga) who interviewed Geza and he went ahead to transmit someone talking about threatening to violently remove the President, how would investors act hearing that there will be no peace in the country? We cannot allow that behaviour continue,” he said.
Minister Ziyambi gave an example of Rwanda genocide which he attributed to journalists who divided The Tutsi and Hutu’s leading to genocide.
Minister Ziyambi said there are no differences in the party leadership with both the president and his deputies focusing on developing the country in unity.
“We have a constitution for our party, and there are ways of choosing leaders which we follow, and no one can just work up and say this one should be here and this one there that’s why we have conferences and congress where anyone wanting a position can freely be voted for and not through social media threats,” he said.
Minister Ziyambi, the law will take its course on those who think they can break the law through creating chaos in the country.
