The Zimbabwe national football team’s coaching landscape has shifted abruptly after the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) confirmed that Warriors head coach Marian Marinica has stepped down from his role, with the association pointing to personal reasons.
In an official statement released on Monday, 27 April 2026, ZIFA said it has accepted Marinica’s resignation and publicly expressed gratitude for his service to the senior men’s national team.
The Zimbabwe Football Association announces that Marian Marinica has resigned from his position as Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Senior Men’s National Team, citing personal reasons,” the statement read.
ZIFA added that it **welcomes the coach’s decision, while also acknowledging his efforts during his time in charge.
ZIFA has accepted his resignation and thanks Coach Marinica for his contribution to the Warriors. The Association wishes him well in his future endeavours.”
In a swift response meant to maintain continuity for upcoming national team obligations, ZIFA named Kaitano Tembo as Interim Head Coach.
Tembo will steer the Warriors during their Unity Cup assignment in the United Kingdom, an event that ZIFA described as a key opportunity for the squad to build momentum.
Tembo’s appointment also includes support from a newly confirmed technical team.Takesure Chiragwi has been appointed as Assistant Coach, completing the interim leadership structure for the UK tournament.
The naming of an interim coaching team is expected to stabilize preparations immediately, particularly as the Warriors shift their focus toward the Unity Cup.
Although the resignation marks the end of Marinica’s tenure, ZIFA did not provide a timetable for the appointment of a substantive (permanent) head coach.
The absence of a timeline leaves the duration of Tembo’s interim leadership open, with attention now turning to how the association will handle the next phase of coaching leadership.
The Unity Cup in the United Kingdom will be Tembo’s first assignment as interim boss. For ZIFA, the move appears designed to ensure that the Warriors remain competitive while also allowing a period of evaluation for the team’s longer term direction in upcoming international engagements.
