In a landmark move that underscores his unwavering commitment to the heroes of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has launched a revolutionary initiative to empower and uplift war veterans across the nation.
Spearheaded by Dr Paul Tungwarara, the Presidential War Veterans Fund is a game-changing initiative that reflects the President’s deep gratitude and profound respect for the sacrifices made by the liberation fighters.
A monumental US$1.5 million has been allocated to the fund, which is already being distributed across the country’s provinces, including Masvingo, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, Bulawayo, and Midlands.
This fund is part of the President’s broader vision to ensure that war veterans are supported and provided with the resources they need to continue contributing to the nation’s development.
Dr Tungwarara emphasized the steady and focused nature of the initiative, assuring that “Rome was not built in a day” and that all 10 provinces will ultimately benefit from this monumental programme.
“The War Veterans Fund will expand and grow in the future. This is just the beginning. We are testing the waters to ensure our war veterans make the best use of this seed capital,” Dr. Tungwarara said, underscoring that this initiative will be a long-term commitment to the veterans’ welfare.
The War Veterans Fund is not just about financial support; it is a comprehensive empowerment initiative designed to address the full spectrum of the veterans’ needs. This includes education and skills training in critical areas such as agriculture, entrepreneurship, and technology, ensuring that these national heroes are well-equipped to continue their contribution to Zimbabwe’s growth.
In addition to these empowering initiatives, the government is offering educational scholarships to both war veterans and their dependents, reaffirming the President’s belief in investing in human capital. War veterans are also receiving assistance with agricultural inputs, tools, and training, enabling them to thrive in their farming ventures and ensure food security for the nation.
Furthermore, the welfare of war veterans extends beyond financial aid. The government has prioritized the health and well-being of the veterans, offering them access to medical care, including mental health services, alongside specialized rehabilitation programs for those with physical disabilities.
The Presidential War Veterans Fund represents more than just financial assistance — it signifies a transformative shift in how Zimbabwe honors and supports those who fought for the country’s independence.
While US$1.5 million may seem modest in the face of long-standing grievances, it marks a significant first step in addressing the needs of over 30,000 surviving war veterans.
Each of the 10 provinces is receiving at least US$150,000 to empower war veterans to embark on projects that will enhance their self-sufficiency and contribute to national development.
For years, war veterans have fought for meaningful recognition and support for their pivotal role in the liberation struggle.
Their voices, once unheard, have now been amplified under the leadership of President Mnangagwa. In response to their calls, the President has committed to ensuring their welfare is prioritized — a commitment he has proven with swift action.
The President’s resolve is clear: there will be no more delays, no more empty promises. The money is already in their hands, and the beneficiaries are already putting it to good use.
With this initiative, President Mnangagwa has proven once again that he is a man of action — not just words. When he makes a promise, he ensures it is fulfilled with speed and precision. This US$1.5 million fund is only the beginning. It is a testament to his leadership and his dedication to uplifting the heroes of Zimbabwe’s independence.
The President’s decisive leadership has demonstrated that no nation can afford to forget its liberators.
Under his guidance, Zimbabwe is ensuring that its war veterans will never again face neglect. With this extraordinary initiative, the President is giving back to those who gave everything for the freedom and independence we all cherish.
