HARARE – First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa was among the excited fans at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday, where she witnessed an entertaining Castle Lager Premier Soccer League clash between Scotland FC and CAPS United.
But beyond the action on the pitch, the First Lady used the occasion to deliver a powerful message to the Zimbabwean football family, declaring that violence, hooliganism, and drug abuse must be rooted out of the beautiful game.
“Sport is a powerful instrument for unity, healthy living and national pride. It should bring us together, not divide us,” Dr Mnangagwa said.
“However, violence, hooliganism, drug and substance abuse have no place in our game.”
The First Lady reiterated her call to supporters, players, and club leaders to reject all forms of violence and to uphold discipline and respect at all times.
“Our stadiums must remain safe, inclusive and welcoming spaces where families, women and children can enjoy the beautiful game in peace and dignity,” she said.
“Let us continue to uphold the values of Ubuntu that define us as Zimbabweans.”
Sunday’s fixture carried added significance as it marked the reopening of the National Sports Stadium following extensive refurbishment works. The First Lady congratulated everyone who worked tirelessly to restore the iconic venue.
“Today is even more special as we celebrate the reopening of our iconic stadium following its refurbishment. Congratulations to everyone who worked tirelessly to restore this important national asset,” she said.
Speaking passionately as a mother and supporter of the game, Dr Mnangagwa urged fans to embrace football as a force for good.
“Football unites people, promotes healthy living and inspires our young people. It should bring families together, not be marred by violence and hooliganism.
“As mothers and passionate supporters of the game, we say no to violence and yes to peaceful, family-friendly football where everyone feels safe and welcome.”
She wished both teams and their supporters an enjoyable afternoon filled with great football, sportsmanship, unity and respect.
The match itself lived up to the occasion, with Scotland FC and CAPS United serving up an exciting encounter that entertained the newly-returned crowd at the refurbished National Sports Stadium.
