The Karoi Town Council has called for urgent road safety reforms following the tragic death of a young woman, Noku Chituri, who was fatally struck by a dislodged wheel from a passing haulage truck on Wednesday.
Town Council Chairperson Councillor Eldermen Chigumo expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing it as a devastating loss for the community.
“Our community is mourning this senseless tragedy,” said Chigumo. “We urgently need stronger measures to improve road safety and prevent such accidents.”
According to police reports, Noku — a resident of Stand Number 1366, Chikangwe — was waiting near a service station for a parcel delivery when disaster struck.
A wheel from the moving truck unexpectedly detached, hit her, and rolled off the road, sparking a small grass fire nearby.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that investigations are underway to establish the circumstances leading to the accident.
Noku’s close friend, Enersi Mbewe, who witnessed the tragedy, said she was still in shock.
“It all happened in seconds. One moment we were talking, the next, everything changed,” she said.
The tragedy has reignited public concern over vehicle maintenance and road safety in the Karoi area.
A similar incident occurred last year when a man was killed by a dislodged wheel while waiting for a lift — a grim reminder of ongoing safety lapses on local roads.
Councillor Chigumo urged authorities and transport operators to take immediate action.
“This loss highlights the dangers posed by poorly maintained vehicles. We must work together — council, police, and the community — to make our roads safer for everyone,” he said.
