Masvingo, Zimbabwe – Journalists in Zimbabwe have been urged to amplify the voices of marginalized groups to drive inclusive growth and sustainable development.
Speaking at the UN-Media Seminar on Development Reporting, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr Edward Kallon, underscored the media’s role in ensuring no one is left behind.
Mr Kallon highlighted the need for the media to tell the stories of children, women, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable groups.
“By elevating their experiences and challenges, journalists can influence behavioral changes and mobilize public support for inclusive policies and programs,” he said.
The UN has been working closely with Zimbabwe’s government to implement initiatives that address social protection, gender equality, and community resilience.
According to Mr Kallon, the media is a crucial partner in these efforts, playing a significant role in fostering dialogue, raising awareness, and inspiring action among stakeholders at all levels.
Mr. Kallon praised the dedication of Zimbabwe’s media practitioners, urging them to continue reporting responsibly and professionally.
“Your work shapes the nation’s consciousness and motivates communities to ask important questions and find solutions to development challenges,” he added.
The seminar concluded with Mr Kallon reaffirming the UN’s commitment to supporting media freedom and its partnership with Zimbabwe’s journalists to advance the 2030 Agenda and national development aspirations.
