Devolution in Action – Expo Moves Beyond Bulawayo

For the first time in its 18-year history, the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo was hosted outside Bulawayo—marking a major shift in Zimbabwe’s approach to regional development and tourism promotion.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially opened the event in Mutare, praising the move as a significant milestone in the implementation of his government’s Devolution Policy.
“By hosting the Expo here in the Eastern Highlands, the sector has showcased the diverse beauty of our country and the immense tourism opportunities that await both domestic and international tourists,” he said.
The relocation of the premier tourism event to Manicaland Province has spotlighted lesser-known destinations such as Nyanga, Vumba, and Chimanimani, described by the President as “Zimbabwe’s hidden gems.”
“Nyanga’s misty mountains, Vumba’s lush forests, and Chimanimani’s dramatic landscapes have now been availed to the world,” he said.
The move also brought significant benefits to local tourism operators, hoteliers, SMEs, and transport services—demonstrating how decentralizing national events can stimulate local economies.
Mnangagwa commended the Ministry of Tourism, Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, and local stakeholders for what he described as a “well-executed event” that reflected a whole-of-government and private sector collaboration.
