A South Africa-bound Achisi Bus Service coach, overloaded with passengers from Malawi, was involved in a fatal accident at the weekend at around 16:50 hours.
The crash claimed the lives of three passengers on the spot and left 15 others injured.
According to witnesses, the bus was traveling along the Harare-Chirundu Road toward Chinhoyi with 119 passengers on board, en route to South Africa.
National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi explained that the accident occurred at the 165km peg on a curve, where a breakdown recovery truck was attending to a previous accident.
“Upon approaching the scene, the bus driver was signaled to stop by a police officer managing traffic. However, the driver ignored the signal and only noticed the breakdown truck at close range. In an attempt to avoid a collision, he swerved to the left, lost control, and the bus veered off the road, landing on its left side,” said Commissioner Nyathi.
The injured passengers were rushed to Karoi District Hospital for treatment, while the deceased were taken to Karoi District Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
