By Admore Mbonda, Kariba

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a teenage girl was struck by a train near Chegutu, sparking an urgent conversation about the safety of pedestrians near railway lines.

The young girl, whose name has not yet been revealed, was reportedly walking along the tracks, unaware of the approaching train, when the tragic accident occurred.

Witnesses who were present at the scene described the moments leading up to the collision as chaotic, with the train unable to stop in time.

Emergency services were quickly alerted, and the girl was rushed to Chegutu District Hospital, where she is currently receiving medical treatment.

While the full extent of her injuries is still unknown, the community remains hopeful for her recovery.

In a statement following the incident, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) expressed their concern, urging the public to be more vigilant around railway tracks.

“Our thoughts are with the teenager, and we wish her a full and speedy recovery,” the statement read.

“We also remind everyone to stay alert and avoid distractions like earphones when near train tracks.”

The tragic accident has once again brought the issue of pedestrian safety near railways into sharp focus.

The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has called for immediate action. Tafadzwa Goliath, a representative from PAZ, shared, “This incident is a painful reminder that we must take railway safety seriously. We must work together to protect both pedestrians and passengers alike.”

The incident echoes the devastating train disaster in Dete in 2003, where 12 lives were lost, and over 200 people were injured.

That catastrophe, in which a train derailed and caught fire while traveling from Victoria Falls to Bulawayo, prompted significant changes to the country’s railway safety measures.

Yet, as this recent incident shows, there is still much more work to be done to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.

As the community comes together to support the young girl in her recovery, the call for stronger safety measures grows louder.

Enhanced public awareness campaigns, stricter pedestrian access regulations, and more community engagement are critical steps in preventing further accidents.

This tragedy, while deeply sad, serves as an urgent reminder that we all share a responsibility to ensure the safety of those who live and work near railway tracks.

It is hoped that this incident will drive the change needed to protect future generations and safeguard the lives of all who walk near the tracks.
