China and Zimbabwe marked the 45th anniversary of their diplomatic relations with a spirited celebration of sports and friendship, featuring table tennis and basketball exchanges that underscored growing people-to-people ties.

The commemorative events began on August 10 with a Table Tennis Friendship Match in Harare. Players from the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union and the Zimbabwe Chinese Table Tennis Association competed in a day of lively and engaging matches.

Chinese Ambassador to Zimbabwe, H.E. Zhou Ding, attended the event alongside Mr. Noah Fernando, Chairman of the Zimbabwe Table Tennis Union, and Mr Garikai, Director from the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture. Awards were presented to participants in recognition of their sportsmanship.

Ambassador Zhou expressed delight at the sport’s growing popularity in Zimbabwe and reaffirmed China’s support for its development.

He announced plans for Zimbabwean players to receive advanced training in China, aiming to boost their performance on the international stage.

“We hope athletes from both nations will continue to write new stories of friendship,” he said.

Zimbabwean officials praised the swift progress of table tennis in the country and voiced appreciation for China’s continued support. They also expressed a desire to expand sports collaboration as a means to strengthen bilateral relations.

The celebrations continued on August 16 with a Basketball Friendship Match, attended by Ambassador Zhou and Zimbabwe’s Deputy Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Hon. Albert Tawanda Mavunga.

The match featured a team from the Chamber of Chinese Enterprises in Zimbabwe and the Chinese Embassy, competing against the Better Basketball Zimbabwe Club.

While the competition was intense, the spirit of camaraderie prevailed, drawing enthusiastic cheers from the crowd.

In his remarks, Ambassador Zhou called the match a “touching chapter” in China-Zimbabwe sports diplomacy and a “vivid reflection” of their enduring friendship.

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to advancing people-to-people exchanges and strengthening the foundation of a shared future.

Deputy Minister Mavunga thanked China for its consistent support in Zimbabwe’s sports development. He emphasized the importance of deepening practical cooperation across sectors for mutual growth and shared success.

Beyond the scores and medals, these friendly matches symbolize the power of sport to unite. Table tennis and basketball served as cultural bridges—fostering understanding, deepening personal connections, and reinforcing the enduring partnership between Zimbabwe and China.

As both countries look to the future, the shared values of unity, friendship, and vitality will continue to guide their journey together.
