MUTARE — The city of Mutare is poised for a major economic boost as it hosts the 18th edition of the Sanganai/Hlanganani Kumbanayi Tourism Expo for the first time in the event’s history.
The move from Bulawayo, where the Expo had been held for 17 years, to the Eastern Highlands marks a significant shift aimed at promoting regional inclusion and economic stimulation in line with Zimbabwe’s devolution agenda.
Hotels are already nearing full occupancy, transport operators have ramped up services, and local restaurants, retailers, and entertainment venues are preparing for what is expected to be a surge in visitor traffic.
“The influx of international buyers, exhibitors, and tourists means more than just tourism exposure — it means jobs, full hotels, and high turnover for small businesses,” said Tourism Minister Hon. Barbara Rwodzi during a press briefing this week.
Key infrastructure upgrades are already underway, including the revitalisation of the Grand Reef Aerodrome, where Air Zimbabwe is resuming flights after decades of inactivity.
In addition, the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has introduced a luxurious passenger train linking Harare and Mutare, easing access to the scenic Eastern Highlands.
“This is not just about an event — it’s about creating long-term opportunities for Mutare and surrounding areas,” Rwodzi added.
The developments are expected to leave a lasting legacy well beyond the Expo, boosting tourism to popular destinations like Vumba, Nyanga, and Chimanimani, and positioning Manicaland as a must-visit province.
