Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe – In a powerful demonstration of commitment to children’s rights and sustainable development, Mr Edward Kallon, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, delivered an inspiring address at the 2024 Regional World Children’s Day commemorations.
Leaders from seven nations gathered to reinforce their dedication to advancing the rights of children across Southern Africa, in alignment with the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Speaking from the iconic Victoria Falls, Mr Kallon emphasized the urgency of accelerating progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting that only 15% are on track globally.
He outlined the UN’s response through its “UN 2.0” vision, which prioritizes modernization, innovation, and enhanced collaboration to deliver meaningful change for children and youth.
“Children are the present and the future,” Mr Kallon stated, as he highlighted the UN’s commitment to transformative investment in education, digital connectivity, climate action, and social protection.
This aligns with the commemorative theme, “Educate and Skill the African Child for Prosperity,” which emphasizes education as a cornerstone for societal transformation.
The event celebrated active child participation, underscoring the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
A Call-to-Action, developed with input from children, will be presented to Heads of State, emphasizing accountability and alignment with frameworks such as the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
Acknowledging the vital contributions of governments, UNICEF, and partners, Mr Kallon praised Zimbabwe’s leadership and the pivotal engagement of the country’s First Lady, Her Excellency Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa, in fostering dialogue between children and leaders.
In closing, Mr. Kallon urged all stakeholders to turn discussions into lasting actions, reaffirming the shared vision of a Southern Africa where every child thrives.
“Together, we stand for your rights and your future,” he affirmed, addressing the region’s youth.
The commemorations in Victoria Falls served not only as a celebration of progress but also as a renewed call for collective action to safeguard the rights and futures of children in Southern Africa.
