HARARE – A new chapter unfolded for tertiary sports in Zimbabwe on Wednesday as Delta Beverages’ Sable Lager was unveiled as the new title sponsor of the rebranded Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports (ZITS) Games, marking a fresh era of investment in young athletes.
Speaking at the official opening ceremony of the 2026 Games in Harare, Delta Beverages Marketing Manager for the Lagers Division, Kundayi Mawema, announced the brand’s entry into a partnership that originally began with Carling Black Label in 2018.
“We are especially proud that Sable Lager joins this journey at a time when Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports has successfully rebranded to Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports (ZITS) from the Zimbabwe Tertiary Institutions Sports Union (ZTISU),” Mawema said.
“This transition speaks to progress, ambition, and the future — values that resonate strongly with the athletes gathered here today.”
Mawema described the sponsorship as a “much-needed springboard” for young athletes to launch their sporting careers, emphasising that the Games are about more than just winning medals.
“These Games are not only about competition; they are also about friendship, resilience, and the courage to dream big,” he said.
“Every sprint, every try, and every goal scored reminds us that Zimbabwe’s future is bright.”
Addressing the athletes, Mawema acknowledged the demanding balance between academics and sport.
“You carry the hopes of your institutions, your families, and your communities,” he said. “Balancing academics and sport is no easy task, and your discipline and resilience inspire us.”
He added: “As a brand shaped by a new generation that is redefining brewing excellence, we are proud to stand alongside the emerging athletes shaping the future of sport and our country.
“Our commitment is to celebrate you, invest in your journey, and help ensure that these Games remain a platform where talent shines and dreams take flight.”
Mawema urged competitors to embrace sportsmanship above all else.
“Let sportsmanship be our standard — be considerate of your fellow athletes, respect the spirit of fair play, and celebrate not only your own victories, but also the effort and excellence of others.”
He extended appreciation to organisers, participating institutions, and all stakeholders who worked to bring the Games to life, before officially declaring the 2026 Zimbabwe Tertiary Sports Games open.
“May the Games begin — this is your time,” Mawema said.
The rebranding from ZTISU to ZITS coincides with Sable Lager’s entrance as lead sponsor, signalling renewed corporate backing for tertiary-level sport in Zimbabwe.
The Games bring together student-athletes from institutions across the country to compete in multiple disciplines, with this year’s edition expected to draw thousands of participants and spectators.
