The National Gallery of Zimbabwe will hold a retrospective exhibition for Marjorie Wallace; a ceramicist who created works that traversed utility into aesthetic value.
Wallace created sought after pieces that had a signature style; as one would observe, basket weaving would be mimicked, with patterns that are cognizant to the viewer being ever present as her motifs.
Marjorie Wallace of Mutapo Pottery: A Retrospective convenes works from her studio and a swathe of collections within and outside Zimbabwe, to celebrate the life and work of a highly
prolific ceramist.
In her illustrious career, Wallace produced countless wares, as well as keep the ceramic aspect of Fine Art alive, with artists such as Berry Bickle and Tendai Maradze-Shoniwa and Moffat Takadiwa receiving tutelage from her.
This exhibition will be the first retrospective since Anthony Bumhira’s Ndiani Mambo (2023), and will serve in memorializing a steadfast creative who dedicated their life through productivity and teaching future generations a critical skill; as pottery has served as a marker for human development and civilization since the advent of man.
The exhibition has been conceived and curated by a team that includes Farai Wallace and
Heeten Bhagat.
