Harare – A tragic incident in Mabelreign has left a community in mourning and the nation questioning the safety of keeping aggressive dog breeds in residential areas.
Samuel Muchara, 39, lost his life in a horrifying attack after being mauled by a pitbull owned by Mike Mupinga, 40.
The fatal encounter has sparked renewed calls for stricter regulations on the ownership of dangerous dog breeds.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incident, stating that Mupinga has been arrested on suspicion of culpable homicide.
“ZRP Mabelreign arrested Mike Mupinga in connection with a case of culpable homicide . . . where his pitbull dogs allegedly attacked and mauled Samuel Muchara to death,” he said.
Eyewitnesses described a gruesome scene near the suspect’s residence, where Muchara’s body was found bearing severe bite wounds. His remains were transported to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary for a postmortem.
The heartbreaking event has stirred outrage and anxiety in Mabelreign and beyond. Residents are now pushing for urgent policy changes.
“We need stronger laws regulating the ownership of these vicious dogs,” said Tariro Kanengoni, a local resident.
“Some breeds become dangerously aggressive and can even turn on their owners.”
Others echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for secure containment. “These dogs must be kept in spaces with proper security,” said Enias Gumbo.
“It’s too risky to have them roaming anywhere near people.”
As police continue their investigations, the community grapples with the sobering reality of the incident.
The tragedy has not only claimed a life, but also exposed the gap in existing pet ownership laws — a gap many believe needs to be urgently closed.
With public outcry growing, pressure is mounting on authorities to introduce stricter dog control legislation, ensuring no other family suffers a similar loss.
