What happened in Mbare (over the weekend) was a simple case of WANTS vs NEEDS!
Voltz is the perfect artist to face the dilemma, I have followed the youthful artist for sometime now, I have seen him perform and I have played him on my devices, his music is something I have come to enjoy the fusion of the trending trap beats, horsey-like Pop Smoke voice and modern varsity slang made me a proud follower!
At exactly 12:56am Voltz JT came on stage belting out his “biggest” collaboration with South African Rapper Emtee.
For the first time in my 12 years in the music industry I saw a young rapper making dancehall fans eating from the palm of his hands, the tide had surely changed, after a good performance from Ndunge Yut (one artist that has been consistent in good live performances) a change in genre was a big gamble for the night which seemed to be paying off, after the third or so song which was Fire Emoji I expected the artist, his Dj or any one from his crew to read the crowd.
The once loving and overhyped crowd was now looking a bit confused because of the selection of songs the artist was now playing which was the biggest mistake made the whole night, I expected the artist to juggle and sample his hit songs only and those songs popular within the “ghetto” circles.
BUT I guess they had an obligation to spend 45 minutes or more on stage, I expected his deejay to juggle a new beat each time the current one hyped up the crowd or at least pull up the beat and repeat the loved song especially on FIRE EMOJI, I expected Voltz JT to give us a 10-minute super hyped performance and ditch the stage!
Come on what’s 15 minutes when Jah Master only performed two songs and ditched!
When Voltz lasted more than 15 minutes with most of his “popular songs yet to be played I sensed danger, it only starts with three people throwing cans then the rest is history!
I know for a fact that this was a big lesson learnt, cans weren’t thrown because his performance was bad! NO!! It was because of the choice of playlist he chose! If it was up to me I would have given him six good songs at most to perform!
Why? because THERE IS A PLAYLIST FOR EVERY PLACE AND CROWD!
This crowd is different from the Cook Out or Fiesta crowds, this is a crowd spoilt for choice, a crowd that has more than 15 big artists on one stage, Voltz should use this to his advantage, now he knows he has to do a crowd research and crowd reading before and during the show, it helps in selection of songs!
Come on he is not the first artist to have cans thrown at him, I can give you a list but unfortunately, I don’t have enough space to write all those names, meaning he is not the first or the last!
I know some corners and organizations will rejoice in the incident but to me THIS IS PROBABLY A BIG WIN FOR VOLTZ AND HIS GENRE. HE CAME, HE SAW, HE ALMOST CONQUERED!!! BECAUSE HE WANTED TO PERFORM WHEN HE NEEDED TO PERFORM
