What does Reinhard Fabisch have to do with Dr Susan Hains? Let’s see.
Reinhard Fabisch is synonymous with the best of what Zimbabwean football has ever been. An enigmatic character who transformed Zimbabwean fans, administrators and players into believers . . . believers that Zimbabwe could yet be invincible.
Fabisch carried himself with the utmost confidence ridding on dripping and infectious celebrity.
By the time he was done in Zimbabwe, everyone was a fan of the “dream team”.
He inspired generations and Zimbabwe joined the world in mourning when he passed away. May his soul rest in peace.
Similarly too was Dr. Susan Hains. Driving her metalic green Hillman, she would roll into the township of Dzivaresekwa to attend our theatre rehearsal.
The one time she brought with her a rather unconverted Ramious Musasa to see our production of “Chingwa” which had recently won the Popular Theatre Festival at the Harare Gardens.
It was her belief that it would be perfect for ZBCTV drama. Much later when she got her blue Datsun Pulsar, that became our designated transport to festivals, workshops and performances all over the country.
Susan drew crowds wherever she went. She had given herself a great mission to break down barriers, myths and suspicions in the theatre and cultural sector. So many amongst us created lifelong friendships, collaborations and networks that have endured and greatly enriched our practice.
However, that is not the story for today. Dr. Susan Hains and I were in the Bulawayo Sun Hotel going for breakfast after another theatre related stay in Bulawayo.
Then in comes Mr Reinhard Fabisch with all his flair and pomp. He walks over to our table and extends his hand to Dr Hains.
Completely star struck, I shuffle to my feet and am staring at the man and like the mega star that he was, he gives me the biggest bear hug and is graciously trying to convince me . . . “its so nice to see you”.
Then he says to Susan, “this is your husband. . ?” Susan, employing her quick turn of wit and humour quickly set him straight.
Rest in power Dr. Susan Hains.
