On the heels of a scintillating performance by Zenzo Nyathi, Theatre in the Park will be hosting top Harare theatre dance group Elysium Magna.
Titled `The Rising Bones` the play will start from Wednesday 9 to 12 November 2022 from 6pm. Rooftop Promotions programs coordinator Passmore Ndlovu confirmed they were prepared to hosting Elysium Magna for four days.
Producer Daves Guzha said it was part of the institution`s deliberate effort to accommodate young creatives like Elysium Magna for them to have access to the venue.
He encouraged young people to consider the venue for all artistic performances.
Directed by Hillary Indi, the play is based on the bombing of Chimoio Freedom Fighter’s Camp and the retaliation against Rhodesian Forces in the Zimbabwean second liberation war.
The narrative unfolds from a scene in the 1890s when Nehanda and Kaguvi were captured after revolting against the white settlers.
They are hung together with other chiefs. Nehanda makes a proclamation that she will rise again and drive away the settlers and give back the land to the black people.
The play features Teurai, a young girl with the people’s will at heart. Her parents were murdered before her and fate crafts her path for revenge.
She meets friends and falls in love with Zengeya a young commanding officer at Chimoio but fate gave her a twist.
We also see Zengeya, a handsome guy in his early thirties who lost his village to a brutal attack by the Rhodesian forces.
His path leads to supporting Teurai but not happily ever after. Svikiro, a spirit medium of Nehanda is seen leading the guerrillas to attaining independence.
One of the main characters is Shatai, the chief commander of the guerrillas who leads his men and warriors through thick and thin in the second chimurenga.
We also see Ian Smith who is the leader of the Rhodesian government and armed forces.
He refuses to grant the black people autonomy and seeks to crush the revolution until 1979 when he declares a ceasefire leading to Zimbabwe’s independence.
Elysium Magna have performed several times at Theatre in the Park. The venue will be hosting a couple of events this festive season including the sensational Feli Nandi this November and a father and son musical concert with Abel Mafuleni and Jacob Mafuleni.
Admission is $3 adults and $1 kids.
