There was joy and celebration after youthful Happyful Tshuma emerged winner of the Nandos Grillers Challenge held Thursday at Avondale branch.
The Victoria Falls based Tshuma won US$100 cash, a food hamper courtesy of the supplier of chickens Irvines and a weekend for two at any Africa Sun Hotels in Zimbabwe.
Second placed was Tanya Manzini based at Pomona Restaurant who walked away with Irvines food hamper and US$50 while Reginald Matthews based at Avondale branch emerged third. Matthews also got US$25 and a food hamper.
The judges including two who flew from Nandos licence markets were looking at various aspects of the chicken, firstly, the quality of the chicken, the colour of the chicken, the bursting of the chicken in terms of flavour whether it was lemon and herb, mild or hot.
There were 16 grillers one per each restaurant except for the big restaurants like Nandos Samora Machel and Avondale which had two.
Steve Chamboko who is Nandos country director said this year’s challenge was very competitive.
“Grillers challenge is traditionally held every year whereby a different destination is chosen to host the international grillers challenge. So before we go to international grillers challenge, we have the national grillers challenge where we take all the grillers from across the country as we have witnessed now.
“So it is Nandos tradition, to have grillers challenge unfortunately it was stopped during the years of Covid-19 2020/21 and it has been resumed this year although this year it is not international. It is only ending at national level,” Chamboko said.
“All the guys have been preparing since last week. We had the semi-final and today is the final with grillers within Nandos restaurants.”
Chamboko said next year the grillers challenge will be bigger and better as it will be held in Malaysia.
