Mystery Deepens in Kariba: Search Intensifies for Two Missing Residents

By Admore Mbonda in Kariba

Kariba — The new year has brought nothing but uncertainty and fear for the families of two missing residents of Kariba Town.

As search efforts intensify, the community is rallying around the families of Mativiri (also known as Hambalala) and Sabina Shereni, both of whom vanished under mysterious circumstances in late December 2024.

Mativiri disappeared on December 31, 2024, after heading out for a routine spearfishing trip in the Zambezi River.

His clothing and a dead phone were discovered along the riverbank, sparking fears that he may have met with a fatal accident in the water. Meanwhile, Sabina, who was last seen on December 28, 2024, on her way to Kariba General Hospital, has not been heard from since. Her family is devastated, with no answers to explain her sudden disappearance.

The unexplained disappearances have sent ripples of concern through the community, especially in light of a similar case from the previous year, when another local man vanished under suspicious circumstances. Residents are now calling for urgent safety improvements along the riverbanks, citing the growing risks associated with recreational activities in the area.

Community Speaks Out

Kariba Mayor Nyasha Ralph Maoneyi, who is actively involved in the search efforts, expressed his deep concern for the families affected. “These incidents are deeply troubling. We need to address the dangers posed by the Zambezi River and urgently improve search and rescue resources to safeguard our people,” he said.

Councillor George Masendu added his voice, calling for greater community vigilance. “It’s devastating to see these families in such anguish. We must come together to support them and demand better safety measures to prevent future tragedies,” he emphasized.

The broader community has also voiced their concerns. Local resident Amini Chikukwa reflected, “The river is beautiful but treacherous. There are too many stories of people going missing after visiting there. Authorities need to take this more seriously.”

Another resident, Mercy Bukuta, echoed the sentiment: “We all hope these families get the answers they desperately need. It’s heartbreaking to see the community suffer like this. Our loved ones must be safe.”

Ongoing Search Efforts

The search for Mativiri and Sabina shows no signs of slowing, with local authorities and volunteers combing the riverbanks and surrounding areas. Kariba’s residents have rallied in solidarity, with many offering to assist in the search. The community’s unwavering support for the families underscores the deep bonds that tie Kariba’s people together.

As the search continues, both families hold on to hope, despite the growing uncertainty.

The people of Kariba are committed to ensuring that no one else becomes another missing person statistic, standing together in the face of adversity.
