Veteran music producer Mono Mukundu has reiterated that music is one of the least paying jobs in Zimbabwe.
Mukundu of Monolio Studios was speaking at Famous Yet Poor seminar hosted by the Zimbabwe Young Influencers Association at the weekend.
The talented lead guitarist said only those artists with financial wisdom will eke out a decent living.
Dubbed “Do Not Succumb TO Pressure,” Mukundu spoke about Zimbabwean artists’ fetish for fashion and expensive cars.
“It is not a secret that music is a low income profession in Zimbabwe. But with financial wisdom one can still be able to save, and make a decent living. But this always fails because artists are pressured to show that they have” made it”, even if they haven’t, by buying expensive clothes, expensive cars & other lifestyles that they cannot afford. Many end up poor because of trying to appear rich.
According to think.ing.com, it is called Status Signaling and it happens more amongst those in poverty, or those that grew up poor. Which is why it is common amongst black people world wide. It fits well in the saying Poverty shouts and wealth whispers.
