HARARE – Next-generation financial services platform Mukuru has officially returned as title sponsor of the St John’s Mukuru Derby Day Festival, elevating this year’s fifth edition into a historic celebration of Zimbabwean youth sport.
This marks the second year of the partnership between Mukuru and St John’s, with the 2026 edition coinciding with St John’s College’s 40th anniversary, celebrating four decades of excellence.
Mukuru leads the charge alongside supporting sponsors Health International and Titan Law.
The St John’s Mukuru Derby Day Festival, which runs from 27 April to 2 May, 2026, is uniquely designed to replicate the high-stakes intensity of traditional derby fixtures every single day for a full week.
This innovative format allows fans to experience the nation’s fiercest school rivalries in one central venue, without travelling across the country over multiple weekends.
The 2026 showcase features a massive field of 49 teams across three core disciplines:
• Rugby (19 Schools)
• Football (14 Schools)
• Hockey: (8 Boys’ schools and 8 Girls’ schools)
The festival typically draws approximately 15,000 spectators. This year, the tournament welcomes St Alban’s from South Africa, joining schools drawn from Matabeleland, Manicaland, Midlands, Mashonaland Country.
Districts, and Harare.
The event has also established itself as a vital scouting hub. Following last year’s attendance by the Sharks Academy, several festival participants have already transitioned into professional developmental ranks.
“At Mukuru, our mission is built on the resilience and ambition of the people we serve across the continent.
We see that same spirit in these young athletes,” said Doug Tait-Knight, Mukuru Zimbabwe CEO. “Returning as title sponsor during St John’s milestone 40th year is a proud moment for us. This festival is more than a sporting event; it’s a high-performance platform where the next generation of African talent is discovered.
“We aren’t just sponsoring a tournament; we are investing in a community hub that mirrors our own commitment to excellence, unity, and the drive to cross new frontiers, whether on the pitch or in the world of financial inclusion.”
Chris Fourie, Director of Sport at St John’s College, emphasised the depth of the collaboration:
“Our relationship with Mukuru is one we are incredibly proud of. Their support goes beyond sponsorship. It’s a genuine partnership that has helped us build this into a flagship event. Together, we are creating something truly special for our schools, our players, and the wider community.”
