Zimbabwean veteran musician Dr Thomas Mapfumo has once again put on hold the David Mandigora Memoria Match following the passing on of another legendary player Joe MMugabe.
Announcing the postponement via his publicist Sam Mataure, The Chimurenga music maestro also known by his clan name as Mukanya, said he was deeply saddened by Mugabe’s death who was part of the organizing team for the Mandigora memorial match.
“Due to the passing of legend player Joe Mugabe, we have decided to postpone the David Mandigora memorial match to a later date to allow the funeral and burial of Joe Mugabe.
“Just as we are preparing for a memorial soccer match of the late legendary David Mandigora, sad news came about the death of yet another soccer legend, Joe Mugabe, really shocking news, apa Mwari vatirwadzisa,” he continued.
“He was part of the team helping organize the Mandigora memorial match. I’m at a loss of words. Joe ufambe zvakanakaHama yangu, you played your part for the Zimbabwe football and may you be rested well my friend.
“My condolences to the Mugabe family, friends and relatives and the football fraternity. I think it is time we celebrate our soccer legends and music legends or any of our legends in whatever field they maybe in than kuzovapembedza vashaya.”
Mukanya called on football fans to celebrate George Shaya whilst he is still alive.
“Let’s celebrate George Shaya whilst we have him so that he can see and feel the love Kwete kuzomhanyamhanya munhu atisiya. I challenge every sector on this one. Rest In Peace Joe Mugabe,” he said.
Mukanya recently postponed his 76th birthday celebrations to mourn the dearl0y departed friends.
Mapfumo, an avid football fan, once owned and sponsored a Zimbabwean top-flight club, Sporting Lions.
He said on the big day he got a lot of birthday wishes from friends, family and fans.
However, he said he would celebrate my 76th birthday later on this year.
“Also there had been too many deaths around, of people I know – starting with David Mandigora, then Misheck Marimo Chidzambwa – so I was not in a celebratory mood. I knew the two guys personally,” he said.
Apart from those to have died in more recent times, Mapfumo has also outlived fellow Zimbabwean music icon Oliver Mtukudzi, a close friend of his over the years.
