The search continues for the bodies of two individuals among five who drowned after a boat capsized in Lake Kariba on Friday afternoon. The incident has left the community in shock as hopes for the missing individuals dwindle.
Mashonaland West provincial spokesperson Inspector Ian Kowera confirmed the tragic event, stating that search and rescue efforts are actively underway.
“We have a sad incident of a boat that capsized on Friday. Three of the five occupants were rescued by a crew participating in a tiger fishing tournament, while the other two are still missing. A team of divers is conducting the search,” Kowera reported.
According to eyewitness accounts, three of the survivors managed to swim to safety, aided by a nearby speedboat involved in the fishing tournament.
However, details surrounding the cause of the accident remain scarce. Some local fishermen suggested that the crew may have been under the influence of alcohol when they departed from Ndomo fishing camp. Additionally, witnesses noted that high waves could have contributed to the boat capsizing.
This tragic incident is not isolated; just last week, two fishermen lost their lives when their boat also capsized in the same lake.
Their bodies were later recovered floating in the water. Drowning cases are typically more prevalent during the summer months of August, but climate change has shifted seasonal weather patterns, leading to increased incidents as early as October.
