Kariba – Kariba Waves Football Club, the last standing community team in the town, has been thrown a lifeline by Kariba Municipality, which stepped in to settle the club’s outstanding US$940 affiliation fee.
The move ensures the team can continue competing in the Northern Region Mashonaland West Division Two League, breathing new life into their season and reigniting hope in a financially strained camp.
Club Secretary Mashal Mushiri expressed deep relief, saying, “We were on the brink of exclusion. The council’s support came just in time—it has lifted our spirits.”
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) had warned that non-compliant clubs faced suspension, adding pressure on community teams like Kariba Waves, which survive largely on donations and goodwill.
Despite financial woes, Kariba Waves has impressed this season, currently sitting second on the log. With the affiliation hurdle cleared, the focus now returns to the pitch, where the players are hungry for victory.
“This isn’t just about football,” said a team supporter. “It’s about pride, unity, and keeping Kariba’s sporting spirit alive.”
The partnership between the club and municipality underscores the power of local support in sustaining grassroots talent and community morale.
As Kariba Waves takes to the field, they now carry not just a ball—but the hopes of a town behind them.
