In a heartfelt letter addressed to the community of Kariba, Tafireyi Makayi, the Chairperson of Kariba Waves Football Club, announced the club’s surrender to the municipality.
The decision, driven by financial struggles and the inability to meet affiliation fees, has left many in the community reflecting on the club’s rich history and uncertain future.
“Tinokuzivisai vagari vekariba nezve team yenyu yecommunity Kariba Waves,” Makayi wrote. “Masai-sai kuti isu se executive yaga iripo tave kudzosera community team yenyu kukanzuru nekuda kwechikonzero chekuwomerwa nekushaya Mari yemaAffliation fees.”
This translates to a solemn notification that the executive committee has decided to return the club to the community due to overwhelming financial burdens.
The letter encourages local residents passionate about reviving the team to approach the Kariba Municipality at the Nyamhunga housing offices.
It reflects a deep sense of loss, as many remember the club’s glory days when it showcased local talent and fostered community pride.
Recently, Shine Gwangwaba, the Member of Parliament for Kariba Constituency, emphasized the need for more sporting opportunities in the area. Speaking in Bulawayo, he noted, “Kariba is one of the most marginalized areas . . . we have big clubs like ZPC Kariba who play in the PSL, that one is not enough.”
His call to national associations to bring more sporting codes to Kariba highlights the community’s urgent need for support and resources.
Kariba, renowned for its stunning landscapes and significant hydro-electric plants, also hosts various sporting events, including angling competitions.
However, the fate of Kariba Waves, one of the oldest clubs in Zimbabwe’s second division, hangs in the balance. The club once celebrated stars like the late Musekiwi and Simon Chingore, who made their marks in higher divisions.
As the community grapples with this announcement, the emotional toll is palpable. Many residents reminisce about the joy the club brought to their lives, fostering unity and pride among fans.
