It was an instant hit, and it still remains a hit!
And it is everywhere: in the bars, shops, gigs and private parties!
In fact, a party wouldn’t be a party unless the DJ plays Killer T‘s Kana Ndanyura.
“Kunyura” in the Shona language means drowning, so the man who calls himself chairman of Zim dancehall sings about drowning in love.
In more ways than one, Kana Ndanyura has broken records as the first track to reach two million views in just three weeks, according to Zimbabwean standards.
That said, the track has also overshadowed Winky D’s Love Quartet, which was released almost at the same time despite The Gafa having 288K subscribers compared to Killer T’s 242K subscribers.
The Spirit Fingerz produced track has won the hearts of many music lovers.
Well, Spirit Fingerz, the man behind the hit song, is not new on the music scene, having produced a number of chart toppers.
He has produced hits for several prominent musicians, including Herman and Rachel J among others.
If you want to know about Spirit Fingerz, his productions begin or end with producer tag “Spirit . . . Spirit!”, a voice sample of Winky D.
He laid his magic on Killer T’s latest track, which has changed the sound we have come to know from the Chairman.
The production is not out of the ordinary, it worked well for someone who loves to sing about Mjolo (dating)
The whole chorus and choir-like vibe has changed the sound and brought out the best in Killer T, who has since a long time ago moved away from hardcore Zim dancehall to pop sound.
Kana Ndanyura was released three months ago on YouTube and has so far garnered 4.7 million views, and still counting!
There is also a cover version by Sunoh and that on its own shows the magnitude and appeal of the song across a wider audience.
Kana Ndanyura is a song that warns family and relatives not to interfere in one’s love affairs. In Shona there is an idiom which says “vaviri vaviri wechitatatu muzvinaguhwa”. Which loosely translates to “love is for two people” or “two is company and three is a crowd.”
So Killer T admits to have fallen head over heels with his partner, but says relatives should rather support their bond instead of putting spanners in the relationship.
Many who are unlucky in love can relate.
Popular ChillSpot Records hype man DJ Fantan has long tipped the track as Song of the Year, judging by the responses whenever he plays the song before huge crowds.
Also Killer T’s fans on his YouTube channel have been upbeat since the release of the track.
One subscriber commented: “If you are listening to this song in 2070, just know that me and the other 99 were the saddest generation of our times and finding true love was the hardest part of living.”
A second subscriber said: “First Zimbabwean to reach 2 million views in 3 weeks . . . chairman muhombe.”
A third subscriber wrote: “Hi Killer T, Ugandan fan here”.
A fourth subscriber noted: “If you a Zimbabwean, and you do not enjoy this song. Your Citizenship should be revoked.”
A fifth subscriber also commented: “Those Already Celebrating 1 million views & being proud of CHAIRMAN & His consistency Mark Here, HOT PROPERTY Those Celebrating 2 million views Pfurai nepano, HAZVIPERI MUSHE NaChairman.”
Another replied: “Truth being told . . .Was annoyed by this “kana ndanyura” . . . Trend . . . Gave myself time to listen. Dude you make sense.”
