Police in Mashonaland West have arrested a 33-year-old Kenzamba man in connection with an attempted murder case after he allegedly set his ex-lover’s bedroom on fire, severely injuring her and her new boyfriend.

The suspect, Eustyn Moyo of Nyajena Mine, Chehonye, was taken into custody following the incident that occurred at around 2:00 AM on 12 November 2025 at the home of Barbara Zimbiti (22) in Mutowa Village, Chehonye, Kenzamba.

According to police, Watson Kazembe (29) of Patchway, Kadoma, was visiting Zimbiti when the attack took place.

Family members were awakened by unusual noises coming from Zimbiti’s bedroom and found the room engulfed in flames.

Villagers rushed to extinguish the fire and managed to rescue both victims, who sustained severe burns.

The pair was taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital before being transferred to Parirenyatwa Hospital for further treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Moyo, who was formerly in a relationship with Zimbiti, had visited her earlier that night. Police said a heated dispute over the sharing of property is believed to have motivated the attack. Investigators allege that the fire was deliberately set in an attempt to harm or kill the victims.

Police urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully and warned that acts of violence driven by jealousy or revenge will be met with stringent legal consequences.

“Acts of jealousy leading to violence or revenge will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face the full force of the law,” the police said in a statement.

Moyo remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court soon.
