In a thrilling clash at Nyamhunga Stadium, newly promoted Kwekwe-based Premier League side Hardrock narrowly edged out ZPC Kariba with a 1-0 victory.
The match was a true test of nerves, with both teams squandering opportunities during a tense first half.
Hardrock, who had recently played to a 1-1 draw against Scotland FC at their home ground, began the match with strong intentions but found it challenging to break the deadlock.
ZPC Kariba, fresh off a victory against Triangle in Chiredzi, was eager to secure another win on their home turf.
The opening minutes saw ZPC Kariba‘s Charles Munyanyi missing an early chance as his attempt veered wide of the post.
In response, Hardrock’s Andrew Phiri also failed to convert a promising opportunity, with his shot going off-target against goalkeeper Future Sibanda.
ZPC’s Kudzai Ngwende created a stir in the first half, but his efforts were stymied by Hardrock defender Munyaradzi Diro’s timely intervention.
The decisive moment came in the 69th minute, as Hardrock’s Washington Navaya unleashed a stunning volley after slipping through the ZPC defense. This goal was made possible by Munashe Bamara’s tireless work, who outmuscled his markers to set up the scoring chance.
Earlier attempts by Hardrock’s Sam Makawa and Diro’s hard free kick were both thwarted by the ZPC defense, while Navaya had another chance that soared over the bar, keeping the game firmly in the balance.
Reflecting on the hard-earned victory, Hardrock coach Kelvin Kaindu expressed satisfaction, stating, “We did not play as expected, but the most important thing is to pick up maximum points. You know how good ZPC are when they are playing at home. I thank the boys for the result.”
On the other hand, ZPC Kariba coach Newman Mashipe voiced his disappointment, saying, “I am very disappointed with the result. We were playing at home and I was expecting maximum points. We will keep on working hard.”
As Hardrock savors their victory, ZPC Kariba will be looking to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming fixtures.
