Kariba — The government has officially recognized that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is no longer just an enabler but a fundamental driver of its reform and modernization agenda.
This declaration was made by the Minister of state for provinciall affair and Devolution Hon Marian Chombo represented by Kariba District Coordinator Mr. Aneli Gumbochuma during an ongoing three-day government ICT specifications standards review workshop held in Kariba.
The workshop is themed “One Digital Language: Advancing Standardization.”
Gumbochuma emphasized the president’s continued advocacy for e-government platforms, stating that these initiatives are essential for reducing bureaucracy, enhancing transparency, and making services more accessible to citizens.
“Through his able leadership, the government has undertaken key initiatives to lay the foundation for a digitally powered government and nation,” he remarked.
Key initiatives highlighted by Gumbochuma include the establishment of the National Data Centre, the Zimbabwe Centre for High-Performance Computing, and the national broadband rollout, especially in rural areas to bridge the digital divide.
He also mentioned various digital literacy programs and the rollout of online services under the broader e-government reform agenda, achievements that he credited to the “Second Republic.”
“The Second Republic is committed to the Devolution agenda, which seeks to empower provinces and local authorities to manage their own affairs and drive their own development,” Gumbochuma stated. He underscored the importance of robust ICT systems and the adoption of appropriate standards in facilitating this process.
“Provinces and local authorities require digital enablement to serve our people better and to connect our communities,” he added.
The workshop has attracted various government ministries and agencies responsible for ICT, fostering a collaborative environment aimed at improving service delivery through technology. Permanent Secretary of the E-Government Technology Unit in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Tafara Matekaire, also addressed attendees, highlighting the significance of aligning ICT initiatives with national development goals.
The event, which runs until Thursday, is expected to conclude with a keynote address by Deputy Chief Secretary Zvinechimwe Ruvinga Churu, further emphasizing the government’s commitment to advancing ICT as a pivotal element of national progress.
As Zimbabwe moves forward in its digital transformation journey, the commitment to standardization and the promotion of e-government services promises to enhance the quality of life for its citizens, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.
