Glow Petroleum, a leading company that distributes diesel, petrol, illuminating paraffin and lubricants together with ZB Bank, have partnered Reformed Church in Zimbabwe in raising funds for people living with disabilities through a Sponsored Walk Project.
Glow Petroleum handed over US$10 000 while ZB Bank donated US$20OO equivalent in ZWL$ towards the cause.
Other companies who also donated cash include Impala Car Rental, Greenwood Farm, Hitwave Transport and Croco Motors.
A group of about 50 congregants from Reformed Church in Zimbabwe undertook a sponsored walk from Gweru to Harare beginning on November 30 and arriving on December 9.
One of the participants was 18-year-old Nyasha Zimuto, a Lower 6 pupil at Thornhill High School who is studying commercials.
She said her motivation was to raise awareness about women with disabilities.
Speaking at the handover ceremony Ms Nyasha Muzuva, the legal advisor for Glow Petroleum, said the company will continuously engage in sustainable value addition initiatives like the sponsored walk.
“As Glow Petroleum we already have a scholarship for students in various tertiary institutions around the country and our selection processes also factor in those students from disadvantaged backgrounds, be it financial or physical.
“Those of a physical nature also are inclusive of supporting students whose parents are blind or visually impaired. We are raising leaders who have grown up with disabilities or have been living with parents with disabilities. We have embraced them as our brothers and sisters and sponsor for their tuition ad accommodation fees for undergraduate programmes at various universities in the country under the Glow Petroleum University Scholarship,” she said.
She said Glow Petroleum was committed to play a pivotal role in its corporate social responsibility policy in enhancing and improving he lives of those affected and living with disabilities.
Emily Mabika of ZB Bank, commended the Church for coming up with the initiative setting the tone for Christmas Good Cheer.
She said ZB Bank would continue to support the community because it was a corporate citizen.
Pascal Muringani, the spokesperson of the project said initially they targeting at raising US$100 000 which will be distributed to institutions which are run by RCZ including Kopota school for the deaf and visually impaired.
The money will go towards sourcing education materials and food among other he said.
