The ‘Silver Arrows’ picked up a second successive win when Lewis Hamilton took the chequered flag at the British Grand Prix earlier this month, ending a run of nearly three years without a race win for the seven-time world champion.
It followed George Russell’s surprise triumph at the previous round in Austria, with Mercedes having now fully reversed course after a couple of seasons in which they simply lacked the pace to compete at the front of the grid.
“Fantastic. You couldn’t have written it better for our [the team of Hamilton and Mercedes] farewell at the British Grand Prix. That was great,” Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff said. He had some difficult times recently. Then, some faultless driving in various conditions.
“I really enjoy us bouncing back. We were one and two for a long time in the dry. Performance-wise, it looks like we are coming back.
“Of course. The last British Grand Prix together. It’s like a fairytale, how we leave the British crowds there with the most successful British driver ever.
“And this time around on real pace. I mean, we were quick in almost all conditions. But it’s on merit and it shows the grit of this team. that we never stopped believing, we never stopped working and when we finally started to unlock the potential before Imola. Now we are on a roll.”
Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen enjoys an 84 point lead over McLaren’s Lando Norris at the top of the Drivers’ Championship. The Dutch driver has sounded a warning to his team in regards to the way their rivals have erased the pace advantage the Red Bulls used to enjoy.
“If you look at an average stint, the others were much faster and drove away,” Verstappen noted.
“McLaren only chose the wrong tyre, because if Norris was on the mediums, I would have had no chance. There is work to be done because we are not the fastest at the moment.”
The Hungarian GP was first held in 1936 and has been a happy hunting ground for Hamilton, who has claimed a record eight wins at the Hungaroring – though the last was back in 2020.
