More often than not splinter groups in music are known for creating competition.
If you look at groups such as Khiama Boys, when Alick Macheso branched out from Nicholas Zakaria he stood out.
And you look at Baba Harare he left Jah Payzah to become his own man and lately, Feli Nandi, she rose to fame as Mbeu’s backing vocalist.
She broke out to become a stand along artist many thought she had blundered because they never imagine her on her own.
But as it turned out, Feli is slow progressing as a two in one artist — a performer and entertainer.
The problem with Feli, however, is that she is yet to come out of her shell.
Yes, she has a great commanding voice and a great stage presence as well as good look but she yet to draw fans into her orbit as a rounded artists.
In other words, she lacks originality.
During her live show, Feli will serenade you but unfortunately she relies heavily on cover versions. More than half of her set is laden with other peoples’ songs.
No matter how gifted she is but for as long as Feli continuously performs other people’s song it would weigh her down.
Last weekend, Feli was one of the guest performers at the launch of Ngoto Beer held at Fisheagle nestled at Lake Chivero.
It was a beautiful atmosphere and Feli and her outfit fitted well on the bill. She delighted the mature crowd with an amazing set performing classic songs by legendary Oliver Mtukuzi, Chiwoniso to Steve Makoni.
The one good thing about her act was that she remained authentic in sound she has mbira, keyboard and a guitar which all produce a great vibe.
Of course, she would intermittently play her own compositions but her performance was largely made up of cover versions.
