As the global spotlight shifts toward sustainable development, NetOne is leading the way in Zimbabwe by aligning ICT innovation with ecological responsibility.
Through the integration of green technologies, including solar-powered base stations and reduced carbon emissions, the telecom giant is reinforcing Zimbabwe’s vision of becoming a top eco-tourism destination.
NetOne’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its rollout of clean energy solutions to tackle Zimbabwe’s electricity supply challenges.
The company is actively replacing diesel-powered infrastructure with solar-powered base stations and lithium battery backups, ensuring uninterrupted network access while lowering its environmental impact.
“We are deliberately reducing our reliance on diesel generators,” said Eng. Raphael Mushanawani, NetOne Group Chief Executive Officer, in an interview at the ongoing Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanayi World Tourism Expo in Mutare.
“Our investment is focused on green energy to power our base stations so that we align with the United Nations’ sustainable development goals.”
Tourism, one of Zimbabwe’s critical economic sectors, depends heavily on seamless communication. NetOne is expanding its 4G LTE network, investing in 5G technologies, and taking bold steps with low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite partnerships—especially vital in remote and mountainous regions such as Manicaland’s Eastern Highlands.
“Tourism is a key economic sector in Zimbabwe, and telecommunications play a critical role in ensuring visitors stay connected with loved ones both at home and abroad,” said Eng. Mushanawani.
“Our goal is to leave no place and no one behind in terms of data connectivity.”
Recognizing that tourism thrives on digital visibility, NetOne is strengthening broadband access in rural and tourism-heavy areas, enabling local businesses to market themselves more effectively. Tourists benefit from dependable mobile and internet services that enhance their travel experience and access to information.
Beyond connectivity, NetOne’s OneMoney mobile platform is empowering both locals and tourists through convenient, accessible financial services.
The platform has seen widespread adoption in rural areas like Honde Valley, where farming communities rely on it to trade and sell produce.
“Digital communication is an enabler for financial services,” Eng. Mushanawani explained.
“With the expansion of our network, OneMoney is becoming a vital tool for financial inclusion across Zimbabwe.”
As Zimbabwe positions itself as a premier tourism destination, NetOne’s integration of ICT, clean energy, and financial inclusion is proving instrumental.
Through its forward-looking investments in 4G, 5G, LEO satellite technology, and green energy, NetOne is not only powering communication—but also preserving the country’s rich natural and cultural heritage for generations to come.
