Hurungwe — In a major crackdown on corruption, three senior officials from the Hurungwe Rural District Council have been arrested by the Harare ZRP anti-corruption unit.
The officials — Felistus Muteta (head of finance), Brighton Dube (internal auditor), and Chamunorwa Mapfumo (head of administration) — are currently being held at Karoi Police Station.
District Administrator Andrew Tizora confirmed the arrests but declined to give details. “I’m working on a report for my superiors and cannot comment further,” he said, citing the sensitivity of the case.
Though official information is scarce, sources allege the trio is implicated in misusing council funds, including the unauthorized payment of their children’s fees at private schools, defying government policy that mandates public school enrollment for civil servants’ dependents.
The accused are expected to appear in a Harare court, amid growing concern about judicial impartiality in Mashonaland West.
Their arrests come on the heels of last month’s conviction of Hurungwe CEO Luke Kalavina and four others for a US$47,000 fraud, fueling fears of deep-rooted corruption within local government structures.
As anti-corruption efforts intensify, citizens are watching closely, hoping for lasting accountability and reform across the public sector.
