A bus conductor died on the spot while filming his bus racing another along Harare-Nyamapanda highway on Tuesday.

The video shot moments before the accident occurred showed the two buses one belonging to Rimbi and ZebraKiss straddling between lanes in movie style.

The ZebraKiss bus which was in the front would zig-zag to avoid being overtaken by Rimbi bus which was in hot pursuit.

The race went for some minutes before a slow-moving Tipper appeared on the way.

According to voices in the clip the conductor said he was taking the video as evidence of reckless driving by ZebraKiss who was blocking his bus from overtaking.

While the Zebrakiss driver avoided colliding into the back of the truck it appeared luck ran out for Rimbi bus driver Penyai Misheck, 39, of Marlborough, who crashed into the truck killing the conductor in the process.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Simon Chazovachii, confirmed the accident, saying the injured were rushed to Mutoko District Hospital.

“Police are investigating a road traffic accident involving a Rimbi bus where one person died on the spot and seven passengers were injured,” said Insp Chazovachii.

“Circumstances are that the Rimbi driver was reported to have failed to overtake, and upon avoiding a head-on collision, he veered and hit the Tipper loading box.

“We continue to urge passengers to warn speeding drivers as well as report any driver violating road safety rules. We urge drivers to exercise caution on roads as well as respect the sanctity of life,” said Insp Chazovachii.

Reports say the driver had been competing with a ZebraKiss bus for passengers when the accident occurred.
