As the world commemorated the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, Zimbabwe joined the global community in highlighting the importance of occupational safety and health (OSH) in the face of rapid technological advancements.
The nation came together to discuss the challenges and opportunities presented by technological changes and to chart a way forward towards creating safer, healthier, and more productive workplaces.
Hon. Edgar Moyo, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, set the tone for the commemoration, emphasizing the need for collective responsibility to ensure every worker’s right to a safe and healthy working environment.
He noted that Zimbabwe is witnessing rapid technological advancements, presenting both opportunities and challenges in OSH.
The minister highlighted concerning statistics on occupational accidents, injuries, and fatalities in Zimbabwe, with 4,912 serious accidents and 76 fatalities recorded in 2022.
Dr. Emmanuel Anesu Fundira, NSSA Board Chairperson, took the stage, emphasizing the importance of harnessing technology to create safe and healthy work environments.
He noted that NSSA remains fully committed to promoting safety and health in all workplaces in Zimbabwe. Fundira highlighted the potential of technology to enhance OSH, including AI-powered predictive analytics and wearable safety devices.
The Director of Ceremony emphasized the need for a proactive and adaptive approach to OSH, leveraging technology to enhance safety, health, and well-being of workers.
He highlighted the importance of collaboration and collective responsibility among government, employers, and labor unions to promote and ensure OSH.
As the commemoration came to a close, it was clear that Zimbabwe was poised to take a giant leap forward in prioritizing OSH issues.
By working together, the nation can create a safer, healthier, and more productive workforce, ultimately contributing to its economic development and growth.
