GWERU – The Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) have completed the construction of a new Early Childhood Development (ECD) classroom block at Mpumelelo Primary School in Gweru’s Mkoba suburb, significantly improving the school’s educational infrastructure.
The new building addresses a critical shortage of classrooms, providing a much-needed safe and secure learning environment for young students.
The completion of the project has been met with appreciation from the local community.
A parent, Tariro Guvheya, expressed relief, stating, “Our children can now attend classes in a safe space, unlike in the past, where we were always worried that something might happen to them.”
Another parent highlighted the positive impact on education standards, adding,
“We are so happy with the handover of the project that was constructed in partnership with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. This is an important building for the school as it will help improve learning standards.”
The project is part of a broader initiative by the ZDF to support national development.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Major-General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi, the Zimbabwe National Army Chief of Staff Administration, emphasized the military’s role in civil aid.
“As provided for in the Constitution, the ZDF’s role in military aid to civil ministries includes contributing to the provision of essential infrastructure, such as this classroom block, which will enhance the Ministry of Education’s efforts to provide quality education to the people of Zimbabwe,” he said.
The Mpumelelo Primary School project is one of several initiatives completed across the country during the ZDF Community Assistance Week.
This week of community-focused projects serves as a prelude to the annual Defence Forces Day celebrations, which are scheduled for August 12.
This year’s celebration will operate under the theme: “Zimbabwe Defence Forces: Guaranteeing Peace and Stability for the Attainment of Vision 2030.”
