Zimbabwe’s legendary dub poetry artist, Albert Nyathi, is set to dazzle international audiences as he headlines the Inkaba Festival (also known as the Umbilical Cord Festival) in London on 3 August 2025 and in Birmingham on 9 August 2025.
Nyathi, a multi-award-winning artist, left Zimbabwe for Europe earlier this week, departing from Robert Mugabe International Airport.
But before boarding his flight, Nyathi took a moment to reflect on a tragic incident in his homeland, expressing his condolences for the lives lost in a head-on collision in Chitungwiza on Tuesday.
“Firstly, I send my condolences to the families affected by the Chitungwiza accident. I wish a speedy recovery to the injured and offer my support to those who have lost loved ones,” Nyathi said solemnly.
Despite the sorrow, Nyathi remained upbeat about his upcoming performance at the Inkaba Festival. “I’m just minutes away from boarding a flight to Europe for the festival. Inkaba, which means ‘umbilical cord’, is all about reconnecting African children with the heart of their heritage,” he explained.
For Nyathi, the Inkaba Festival represents more than just another international performance.
“This festival is special. It’s not just a celebration of music but also a chance to unite African communities around the world, particularly those from Zimbabwe, and share the beauty of our culture,” he shared.
This won’t be Nyathi’s first international festival. The iconic artist, who has performed at countless events across the globe, spoke about the uniqueness of the Inkaba Festival.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at many festivals worldwide, but Inkaba has a distinct focus—it brings together African people to connect with their roots and experience Zimbabwean artistry.”
When asked about his peers in the Zimbabwean music scene, Nyathi hesitated, laughing as he replied, “That’s a tough one! Every artist has their own unique brilliance.
But globally, Mokoomba and Black Umfolosi have made waves internationally. Mokoomba’s vibrant Tonga music and Black Umfolosi’s soul-stirring harmonies have captivated audiences worldwide.”
Nyathi also reminisced about the late, great Zimbabwean artists who made an impact on the world stage. “The late Gogo Stella Chiweshe and Sister Chiwoniso Maraire were phenomenal in their own mbira music. They carried our culture with pride, touching the hearts of listeners globally,” he said with reverence.
Known for his powerful poetry and deep connection to African roots, Nyathi is not only a celebrated artist but also an accomplished scholar.
“Along with my musical journey, I’ve earned several international awards. My highest qualification is a Master of Philosophy (M-Phil),” he revealed just before heading to his gate at 11:30 AM on 23 July 2025.
As Nyathi embarks on this exciting European tour, his dedication to promoting Zimbabwean culture, his passion for African unity, and his artistic vision are set to shine at the Inkaba Festival, reminding the world of Africa’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.
